You know that I am the truth bomb girl!

I don’t necessarily like to be that girl.

But I also know that telling the truth is far better than getting the run-around. In fact, as an educator, I feel it is my duty to give you the straight talk in a palpable, accessible way. In this business, so many people will tell you what you want to hear. But I actually value having folks around me who will tell me the truth.

So, here’s today’s #truthbomb.

“You cannot get cast in your living room!”

I know, with modern technology and self-taping, I guess “technically” you can get cast in your living room. But I’m talking specifically to those of you who are just waiting for that call. Sure, everyone would love that day when you’re just hanging around and someone thinks of you, picks up the phone, and says, “Hey, I want you to star in my show!” That’s a pretty cool notion, right?

Can this happen? Yes!

Does it happen? Yes!

Is this how it normally happens? No. Certainly not when you are starting out in this business.

The normal process of getting work is to get out of your house and go to an actual audition. There is still NOTHING out there that is more direct than this.

I don’t care if you hear people talking about connecting with industry folks on social media. Or meeting them at a party. Or following them on their Instagram. Of course these are important ways to connect. But, the bottom line is… at some point, you will have to get in front of them, in a room, as an actor, for them to actually consider hiring you.

If you are hoping that all the reading you are doing about being an actor, or all the on-line courses you are taking, or all the marketing strategies you are trying are going to get you jobs, you, my friend are kidding yourself.

The only thing that gets you a job is DOING THE WORK! If you are just talking about doing it, thinking about doing it, or waiting to do it when everything looks perfect, YOU ARE NOT DOING IT! #dothework

Okay, I’ll get off the soapbox now.

But know this.

You are not alone.

There are many actors (and people for that matter) who are looking for the quick fix, or the short cut, or the person who will simply give them permission to go after their dreams. Don’t be one of those people.

Be the one who gets up everyday with a plan in place to create the life you want to lead. Work hard. Go to auditions. Meet people. Take class. Stay in communication with the industry and keep showing up.

I call it ‘being on the court’ which is the difference between talking about going to an audition and actually going. #onthecourt
